BUPA is by far the largest private health care organisation in the UK, and the leading provider of international private medical insurance. Founded 50 years ago as a provident association, BUPA has over 8 million members of 115 nationalities in 190 countries.

HorizonHealthPlans.com is satisfied that BUPA International offers the "gold" standard in international health insurance, bringing integrity and peace of mind to an area of your life that deserves the best.

In a recent survey by the charity Cancer Bacup, published in The Sunday Times, "Seven of the eight insurers, including Axa, PPP Healthcare, Norwich Union and Standard Life admitted that they did not always cover cancer patients throughout the course of their illness, BUPA was the exception". You can expect no less of BUPA.

BUPA International Lifeline schemes

Essential

Concentrates on hospital treatment. Cover for treatment during a hospital stay or as a day-care patient.

Classic

Cover for specialist medical treatment or diagnosis, out-patient consultations, including diagnostic tests, and in-patient hospital stays.

Consultant / Specialist

'Consultant' is a word used in the UK to describe a doctor who has specialised in a specific area of medicine. In other countries around the world, you will see such people referred to as 'physician' and 'specialist'.

Close window

Out-patient

The word 'out-patient' covers a variety of treatments. We usually use the word in reference to the consultations that you have with your physician or consultant, the diagnostic tests that you may have in the physician's rooms, or hospital physiotherapy and other such therapeutic treatments.

BUPA International's ESSENTIAL scheme does not cover out-patient treatment.

Close window

In-patient

'In-patient' cover includes accommodation costs, nursing costs and any diagnostic tests carried out during your stay in a hospital or clinic. Most day-case treatments or operations do not require that you stay in a hospital bed overnight. Charges for such day-case treatments are usually paid as in-patient benefit and therefore have full cover.

All BUPA International plans cover you for in-patient / day-case surgeon and anaesthetist fees.

Gold

BUPA International's most comprehensive scheme, covering family doctor visits, prescription medicine, as well as in-patient and out-patient treatment. Home nursing and emergency dentistry is also covered.

Family Doctor

We have tried to use a phrase that has the same meaning across the world. In the UK the term is 'General Practitioner', though in some countries it is translated as 'Family Doctor,' while in other countries an equivalent term does not even exist.

The Family Doctor Benefit, which is only available with our GOLD plan, is aimed at this general area of treatment. It encompasses the every day medical attention that you or your family would receive for ailments such as headaches, flu, throat infections, backache etc. It effectively represents the first point of contact in the treatment path.

ESSENTIAL and CLASSIC plans do not give cover for this type of treatment.

HorizonHealthPlans advice

Obviously you will choose the option that meets your current needs best, but remember, you can choose a different level of cover in future years to take account of any changed circumstances. You should bear in mind that some conditions will be excluded if they are diagnosed within a certain period of any upgrade. See "What's Not Covered".

Classic is the most popular option offering a sensible balance between cover when you need it and cost.

Choosing Essential will substantially reduce your premium, whilst making sure that you have cover for the expensive part of your treatment when you need it.
