Reducing the Cost of Your Health Insurance

BUPA's annual 'deductibles'

Agreeing to pay the first part of your claims for the year can reduce the cost of your health insurance by up to 30%. What BUPA International calls an annual 'deductible'.

With BUPA International you can choose to pay the first £100, £250, £500 or £1000 of your claims for the year (other currency options are available - $160, $500, $800, $1600, or €160, €500, €800, €1600).

HorizonHealthPlans advice

If you would feel comfortable paying the first £100, £250, £500 or even £1000 (or euro or dollar equivalent), of your claims for the year it could be the most significant saving you could make on your annual health insurance costs. For example a 60-year-old with Lifeline Classic cover would save 12% by paying the first £250, and 30% by paying the first £1000. Use our online instant quote facility to see how much you could save in your circumstances.

You could always choose a different amount, or none at all, in future years should you feel that more appropriate to your changing circumstances.

If you decide to reduce your premium by paying the first part of your claims for the year, what BUPA calls an 'annual deductible', you must pay by either credit card or Direct Debit, though you can still pay monthly or quarterly if you wish.

A word of caution

Please note that the deduction is against your claims for that year, and not for a course of treatment. In other words, if your course of treatment lasts more than one year, you will pay a deduction for every subsequent year the treatment lasts, (assuming there are costs in those years). On the other hand you can make as many claims as you want in any one year and still pay only one deductible amount.
